It is sort of fashionable for many to be down on Valentine’s Day. Sometimes, it is the aged among us, worn down with the reality of false hopes and broken promises. For some, the idea of Valentine’s Day threatens the identity they think they have.
One of the biggest excuses people find to be down about the whole thing is the commercial exploitation of the day. Florists hike up the cost of red roses by a whopping percentage. The cost of anything rachets up a few notches. The only reason they do this is the faithful vastly outnumber the cynics. Those faithful who will bear any cost to demonstrate the depth of their love.
And why not?
If you are a hulking, muscle-bound construction worker who has a thing for fancy dinners and your wife, why not go all out? And who gives a crap what your workmates might say in morning? Sure, some will say you should be doing it every day. But they are more likely pessimistic wet blankets like me. It is the fact you have put aside a few hours on an evening and done something cool that makes this all notable. Do you.
Throw caution to the wind. Do what your heart tells you and don’t listen to those who would pull you down. It is your heart. Do what you want with it for the heart of the one with whom you are in love.
